What Can I Do With an A Level in Computer Science? (Jobs & Prospects)

FunTech offers a gateway to university to students who take A Level Computer Science. Our course is 100% online and will stretch your ability to apply programming concepts with in-exam coding. It also expands on the theoretical aspect of computer science through an extensive A Level Computer Science curriculum.

Before students take this course with us, a common question will often be related to what a Computer Science A Level is good for, or what jobs they can get with the qualification.

Let’s address first what Computer Science A Level is good for.

If you get an A Level in Computer Science, then it can serve as a strong foundation for a a future career in technology. The A Level gives students with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental concepts and principles in computing.

This includes topics such as the fundamentals of programming, algorithms and data structures, computer systems, databases, computer networks, and more.

Having this broad range of knowledge can lead to a variety of opportunities in the technology industry such as software development, data analytics, network engineering, cybersecurity, IT consulting and many more. Additionally, it can also be a good step for pursuing higher education in computer science or related fields.

Let’s now look at what jobs you could get with A Level Computer Science.

What jobs can I get with a level computer science?

Having an A Level in Computer Science could lead to various job possibilities in the tech field. Here are some jobs you might be able to get:

Software Developer

Software developer create, build, and maintain software programs and systems. They can use many different programming languages and tools to write the code, test and fix errors, and launch a piece of software. It will often be a team job, as many software developers work with other developers, engineers, and stakeholders during the software development process, starting from concept, design, to deployment and maintenance.

Network Engineer

Network engineers are responsible for designing and maintaining network infrastructure to support the IT needs of an organization. Their job can overlap with other IT roles such as computer network architects or security systems engineers, and they can work in-house or as consultants. Duties include configuring networks, troubleshooting performance issues, monitoring the network, and implementing security measures like firewalls.

Systems Administrator

System administrators are responsible for the management, maintenance, and support of the IT infrastructure in a multi-user organization. The responsibilities of IT systems administration can vary depending on the size of the organization or the scope of work, which may lead to different job titles such as Database Administrator (DBA), Security Administrator, and Network Administrator in large enterprises, but may be handled by a single “sysadmin” in smaller companies.

Data Scientist

You could also get a job as a data scientist in the future. They employ scientific techniques, procedures, algorithms, and systems to extract insights and knowledge from data. They blend statistical analysis, machine learning, data visualization, and their knowledge to interpret complex data. They can also design and build data models, develop data pipelines, and execute data-driven solutions.

Database Engineer

Database engineers manage, test, and implement databases. They monitor changes to databases, troubleshoot performance issues, and ensure capacity and scalability. They might also implement security measures to protect the company data. They might also design strategies for enterprise databases, data warehouses, and multidimensional networks, establishing company standards for database operations, programming, queries, and security.

IT Support

IT support technicians work to improve the overall performance, efficiency, and productivity of a business by supporting users with computing problems. They will also identify and implement IT solutions. They assist in resolving technical issues related to the organization’s computer systems, telecommunications network, LANs, WANs, and desktop computers, and can work on-site or remotely.

Those are just a small handful of the jobs someone with a Computer Science A Level might end doing. However, we would recommend that by going on to university and studying computer science related topics further, you would stand a better chance of future employment.
