Robotics Summer Camps in 2020 for Kids Aged 7 to 14

If your child is excited about robots, why not use that love of all things electronic to engage them and develop their creativity? An early exploration into robotics can bring out many applicable skills some of which can be taken forwards and may even lead to a gateway into electronics and engineering careers.

And one of the best ways to do this?

Robot programming summer camps…

What is a robotics camp?

Robotics summer camps are fun way of introducing concepts such as engineering and coding, as well as bringing out your child’s creative side.

Kids can design and build their very own robots to compete with one another in a battle of strength, speed and intelligence.

We offer two separate robotic summer camps for children between ages 7 to 14, with both courses varying in ability and complexity.

Whichever one you choose, your child will come away from the camp with an increased love of robots and an understanding of how they work. Learning doesn’t just take place in a classroom, after all!

Our two current summer robotics courses are:

LEGO Robotics Junior Camp – ages 7 to 10

For children between the ages of 7 and 10, LEGO Robotics Junior camp lets your children design and build their own LEGO robots.

Using LEGO’s Mindstorms visual scripting environment, they will also learn how to code and program them to operate them through motors, ultrasonic, sounds and even touching.

Learning to code and script from a young age is just as useful as learning a new language from a young age, meaning that it may be easier for them to pick up on more complex coding languages later on if they want to continue learning to code.

LEGO building materials allow for children to design and build their own robots without having to worry about the health and safety of them handling things like metal or hot glue.

At the end of the week, they will put all of their building and coding to the test as they face the Grand Finale. With friends and families welcome at 4pm on the Friday, their robots will take part in three difficult challenges of strength, intelligence and stamina to find the ultimate victor!

Code-A-Bot: Robot Wars – ages 10 to 14

For children between the ages of 10 and 14, this 5 day summer camp brings the robotics skills up a level (but don’t worry, you don’t have to have done the junior camp to take part in this one!)

Using the latest LEGO technology, including LEGO’s Mindstorms visual scripting tool, your child will be able to learn and put into practice skills such as problem solving, visual coding and engineering to create their very own robot.

Your child will be able to learn and develop skills in construction, visual programming, coding and programming concepts that can act as a gateway to learning more complex computing later on.

Over the course of the week, these skills will accumulate, allowing your child to do more complex things with their robots, including coding constructs such as branching and looping and really allowing them to play around even more with them to create something unique.

On the final day, Friday at 4pm, friends and family will be able to come and see their final Senior Grand Finale, where their robots will be put to the test to find out which is the strongest, smartest and most robust of the lot!

Why choose our summer robotics camps?

While in a classic classroom environment, children have a tendency to switch off, especially those who prefer to learn through doing. This means that they can often miss out on things that may normally engage their interests, such as engineering.

However, putting it through a fun lens such as robotics can help to bring out your child’s passion for engineering without feeling any pressure of an academic environment or even feeling as if they are learning at all!

Robots are a great way of engaging anyone, both children and adults alike, with shows such as Robot Wars inspiring many people to put together their own metal machines to do battle.

Our summer camps focus on letting children use the full breadth of their creativity to design and build a robot of their own, whilst introducing them to engineering and coding through problem solving and allowing them to figure it out for themselves.

Across both summer camps, our highly trained tutors will lead them through a week of designing, coding, building and testing to create the best robots they can. Then there’s a final showdown presentation to parents on the Friday afternoon where the robots will be put head to head to see who will win the grand final challenge.

Who can take part?

The age range varies depending on the camp you have chosen, with the Junior Camp being for 7 – 10-year olds and the Code-A-Bot camp being for 10 to 14-year olds.

Adults are allowed to come and see the final result of the week on the Friday at 4pm, when the final challenges will take place.

Pick up and drop off times

Day camps last for eight hours, beginning at 9:00 am and finishing at 5:00 pm. Parents will need to drop off and pick up their children at these times. For those who might struggle with other commitments, earlier drop offs at 8:30 am can be made, as well as a later pick-up of 5:30pm. However, these earlier drop-offs and later pick-ups include an extra cost of £10 per drop-off or £30 for all five days.

If you cannot make it to the pickup time of 5:00pm, such as if you are running late or are struggling to get to us, please ring the number supplied to you as soon as possible and let us know.

Some camps vary their start and end times depending on their location, so for a more accurate start and end time for your specific camp please check your supplied welcome pack.

When do they happen?

Our camps run throughout the summer period, from the start of July to the end of August.

These camps differ depending on the location, meaning that one camp may start on another day to the same camp in another location. For camp dates for a specific area, please check out our booking page to see a full list of camps per location.

While we do mainly offer summer camps, we do run some classes during term time. Our Maidenhead and Hampstead locations offer both holiday and term time camps, as well as virtual courses from our HQ in Maidenhead.

Where are our robotics summer camps?

We run our camps across a variety of sixteen separate locations, placed throughout the inner and outer London area as well as other areas across the South East.

However, each location has different camps available, with certain locations not featuring particular camps and some having more than others. Because of this, it is important that you check the listed camps for the location that you are interested in to see which camps they are running.

Our robotics camps are being run in thirteen of our locations, with the camps listed below. Places are limited and sell out quickly, so it is important to book a place as soon as possible.

  • Barbican
  • Hampstead
  • Maidenhead
